THE LYRICS

Original lyrics and translation

Read the English original, the Spanish translation, or both texts stanza by stanza.

I thought I'd know you from a distanceBy the way you stood
Pensaba que te reconocería desde lejosPor tu forma de estar
By something written in your clothesOr something in your blood
Por alguna señal en tu ropaO por algo que llevaras en la sangre
I thought the moment you came closerI'd understand
Pensaba que, en cuanto te acercaras,Comprendería
What made you differentWhat made you dangerous
Qué te hacía diferenteQué te hacía peligroso
What made youOne of them
Qué te convertíaEn uno de ellos
Then you turned
Entonces te giraste
And for a secondNothing I'd been toldWas there
Y, por un segundo,No vi en ti nadaDe lo que me habían contado
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
There was no enemy
No había ningún enemigo
Just tired eyesLooking back at me
Solo unos ojos cansadosQue me devolvían la mirada
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
All the words went quiet
Todo lo que habían dicho quedó en silencio
Nothing they had taught meFit
Nada de lo que me habían enseñadoEncajaba
The person standing there
Con la persona que tenía delante
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
I saw someoneAfraid
Vi a alguienCon miedo
Like me
Como yo
You didn't raise your voiceOr move
No levantaste la vozNi te moviste
You didn't need to speak
No necesitabas hablar
Your hands were shaking slightlyAnd I knew that mine were too
Te temblaban un poco las manosY sentía temblar las mías
For years I'd built you in my mindFrom every warning I'd been given
Durante años me había hecho una idea de tiA fuerza de escuchar advertencias
But no one ever told me
Pero nadie me había dicho nunca
You would lookSo human
Que vería en tiA una persona como yo
I knew the story
Conocía la historia
I knew the side
Conocía el bando
I didn't knowYour eyes
No conocíaTus ojos
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
There was no enemy
No había ningún enemigo
Just tired eyesLooking back at me
Solo unos ojos cansadosQue me devolvían la mirada
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
All the words went quiet
Todo lo que habían dicho quedó en silencio
Nothing they had taught meFit
Nada de lo que me habían enseñadoEncajaba
The person standing there
Con la persona que tenía delante
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
I saw someoneAfraid
Vi a alguienCon miedo
Like me
Como yo
Maybe that's whyThey keep us far apart
Quizá por esoNos mantienen lejos
Maybe distanceMakes the story easier
Quizá la distanciaHaga más fácil creer lo que nos cuentan
Maybe hate needsSomeone without a face
Quizá el odio necesiteA alguien sin rostro
Because standing here
Porque, estando aquí,
I can't make youWhat they said
No consigo verteComo me dijeron que eras
You looked at me
Me miraste
I looked at you
Te miré
Neither of us moved
Ninguno se movió
And somehow
Y, de algún modo,
That was enough
Eso bastó
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
I lost the enemy
Dejé de ver un enemigo
Not the history
No la historia
Not the pain
No el dolor
Not everythingThat brought us here
No todoLo que nos trajo hasta aquí
But something changed
Pero algo cambió
When I saw your face
Cuando vi tu rostro
I couldn't turn youInto them again
Ya no podía reducirteA uno de ellos
You were standing there
Tú estabas allí
And I was standing here
Y yo estaba aquí
Two people
Dos personas
With nowhere leftTo hide
Sin un lugar dondeSeguir escondiéndonos
No side
Sin bando
No name
Sin nombre
Just your face
Solo tu rostro
And mine.
Y el mío.
Notes on the translation

“Dejé de ver un enemigo” describes a change in how someone is seen. The history and pain remain.

The references to clothes and blood belong to the narrator’s initial prejudice.

The translation accompanies the original lyrics, preserves their stanzas and is not adapted for singing.

What the warnings had left out

Editorial reading

Before coming closer, the narrator believes he knows what he will find. For years he has built a figure from the warnings he received: someone different, dangerous, recognisable from a distance. Certainty has grown without the need for an encounter.

When the person turns, that explanation stops working. There is weariness in their eyes and a tremor in their hands that he recognises in his own. Neither raises a voice. For a moment, they remain there, and the learned story cannot take the place of the face.

At the end, the lyrics return to history and pain. They are still there. The change happens in the person looking: he can no longer return this person as easily to the anonymous group of “them”. He has seen something his warnings did not know how to tell.

The encounter keeps its uncertainty. They do not yet know what to do with it. The song ends in a gaze that has lost a certainty before finding an answer.

The difficulty of reconsidering a certainty

While someone remains far away, it is easy to believe we already know them. Up close, details appear that the old explanation did not account for. The narrator has to decide what deserves more trust: what he sees or what he expected to find.

In this song, shared fear opens that gap. Recognising it is not enough to establish trust. It does change how honestly the narrator will be able to keep speaking about the person he has seen.

THE QUESTION THAT REMAINS

What happens when a face contradicts everything we learned?

After the song

Both stay still. Their hands shake, and the old explanation can no longer name the person opposite.
