Face to face

The street at the end is the street from the beginning, although it can no longer be crossed with the same innocence. Between one song and the next lie names that became unfamiliar, a photograph left face up and a cup that no longer needs to be set out.

The final encounter carries those absences with it. Neither can give the years back or speak for what the other has lived. They do not know how much of their stories they will be able to share. Even so, they remain face to face.

At that moment, the title takes on a different meaning. The other side held what they had learned to exclude. Now a person with tired eyes stands there. Listening may be difficult; they can no longer pretend not to have seen them.

Recognition does not resolve the conflict. It makes it more demanding: once we have seen a person, reducing them to a label again requires us to set aside something we already know about them. The ending leaves the characters with that responsibility.

The other lives in the album remain too. Someone keeps a summer photograph. A house still feels the absence of someone who does not return. A light stays on in two windows. The protagonists’ encounter matters within that world, which does not stop when the music ends.

The line is still there. So are they. For tonight, they can look at each other.
